Americans in Wartime Experience

Gina Barnhurt

Gold Star Mother

Gina Barnhurt's son, Lance Corporal Eric Herzberg joined the United States Marine Corps right after graduating from High School.  He served as a SAW Gunner during the War on Terror / Iraqi Freedom.  When she asked him why he was determined to be a Marine, Lance responded, "Mom, it's what God's calling me to do."

On October 21st 2006, while on a routine patrol to get gasoline, Eric was providing security for his team of Marines when he was shot in the back by a sniper.  Despite receiving immediate care from a Navy Corpsman, Eric died from his injuries.

Ms. Barnhurst recounts the day she was notified of her son's death as well as the response by the Marine Corps who never left her side, and continues to offer her and her family support.  She also talks about the Gold Star Mothers, an organization she is very active in to help other mothers like herself. If you have any biographical data, information or pictures regarding the service of Gina Barnhart's son, Lance Corporal Eric Herzberg, please contact us using the "Add Info" button below.
